Antonio has spent over a decade building startups and shaping business models, with a strong focus on the fintech sector. His extensive experience has given him deep insights into the industry and its challenges.

In 2023, Antonio decided it was time for a change and made the move to "switch sides" by joining the banking world. He now works at Berliner Volksbank, where he collaborates with Simon to lead the development of the bank’s innovation unit, driving forward new ideas and transformative projects.

Simon began his career as a dual student at Berliner Volksbank, gaining hands-on experience in banking from the start. He later joined the bank’s newly established strategy division, where he took on a project focused on creating an innovation unit.

Today, that vision has become a reality. Together with Antonio, Simon has built the innovation unit and now leads Team Innovation at Berliner Volksbank, fostering creativity and forward-thinking solutions within the bank.

What sets fintech apart from other sectors?

Antonio: What sets fintech apart is its focus on solving real-world financial problems in an innovative and user-friendly way through technology. This approach has made financial services faster, more affordable, and more accessible to a wider audience.

Simon: Fintechs have pushed traditional financial institutions to innovate more quickly by addressing areas where incumbents were previously reluctant to change. As a result, fintech has had a greater impact on people's everyday lives than any other startup sector over the past decade.

Why is your company located in Berlin?

Both: The Berliner Volksbank is proudly based in Berlin, reflecting our deep roots in the region. As a cooperative bank, our mission is to directly support the local economy and serve our members.

What’s your favorite place in Berlin?

Both: There are many great spots in Berlin, but Boxhagener Platz is definitely one of our favorites. It captures so much of what makes Berlin special: a cozy park to unwind, bars where you can grab a drink without breaking the bank, and an array of cool restaurants and unique shops to explore.
